GEO WALK 2021
Pune city is located near the western margin of the Deccan Plateau. Located in the Sahyadri Hills, near the west coast of India; Pune is a fascinating city with a salubrious climate throughout the year.
The basalt deposits in Maharashtra are formed due to the basaltic volcanic eruptions. These eruptions are favoured by low gas content and low viscosity magmas, basaltic volcanic activity occurs over the surface of the earth.
Vetal Tekdi, at an elevation of 2,600 feet, is the highest point in the city. On a blissful clear morning, one can see the city of Pune, at sunrise. Home to ARAI known as the Automotive Research Association of India, there is also an observation deck maintained by the Indian Forest Department. You could do a lot around the hill, but locals usually come here for their morning jogs and you'll spot several walking and mini hiking enthusiasts. It's one of Pune's most mesmerising and treasured experiences.

So Ninox recently conducted a geo walk exclusively for its members to ARAI Tekdi, the highest known point in the city which was led by Divyanshu Pawar
The walk was highlighted by Geological and geographical context of Western Ghats formation and Geology of pune. The formation of earth and the geological processes that plays a major role in its evolution. The Deccan basalts that are exposed on the Western Ghats escarpment and are a spectacular geomorphic feature.
The members became more aware about the geology, demographics and lesser known facts about pune. They also sighted few rocks and minerals which are commonly found in pune. Many of them were zeolite minerals such as Quartz, Calcite and Stilbite.
Divyanshu also highlighted about the importance of such place by commenting on the question what is special about this geology? It is that the compact and vesicular basalt rocks act as recharge and discharge places, allowing water to seep in and out, and accumulate in aquifers or storage houses of underground water. It is important to preserve areas like Vetal hill and the ecology around it.
